When lead miner William S. Hamilton, the son of Alexander Hamilton, migrated from Illinois to Wisconsin in the late 1820s, he established a lead ore mine that became known as Hamilton's Diggings. He later renamed the settlement Wiota.

Wiota, a post-village in Wiota township, Lafayette co, Wis., about 44 miles S.W. of Madison. It has several churches and a brewery. The township has 5 churches. Pop. of the township in 1890, 1627.
