About Sainte-Marie
Sainte-Marie, an important industrial, commercial and agricultural center, is located about 40 kilometers south of Quebec. The city covers an area of more than 106 square kilometers. The Chaudière River crosses its territory.
The name of the city comes from the name of Marie-Claire Fleury de la Gorgendière, wife of the first lord of the region, Thomas-Jacques Taschereau, to whom the seigneury was granted in 1736.

During the 19th century, Ste-Marie retained its agricultural importance, but progressively became a regional service centre as the construction of the Québec Central railway sparked the development and settlement of its hinterland.
