The town of Sainte-Marie, sometimes called Sainte-Marie de Beauce, is part of the historic and traditional region of Beauce and is located in the Municipalité régionale de comté de La Nouvelle-Beauce (administrative region of Chaudière-Appalaches), whose it is the capital.
Sainte-Marie, an important industrial, commercial and agricultural center, is located about 40 kilometers south of Quebec. The city covers an area of more than 106 square kilometers. The Chaudière River crosses its territory.
The name of the city comes from the name of Marie-Claire Fleury de la Gorgendière, wife of the first lord of the region, Thomas-Jacques Taschereau, to whom the seigneury was granted in 1736.

The parish of Sainte-Marie was founded in 1737 and canonically erected in 1835.
In 1913, the urbanized part of the parish separated to form the village of Sainte-Marie which obtained city status on April 9, 1958. In 1978, the parish and the city came together again.

Granted Sept. 23, 1736, to Sieur Taschereau. The principal proprietors now are O. Perrault, Chas. Taschereau, E. Taschereau, Geo. Taschereau, and __ Fortier, Esqrs... The Village of Ste. Marie is the largest and most flourishing on the Chaudiere; it consists of 39 houses, including the manor-house, two seignorial houses, a custom-house and two good inns; this is also a church with a parsonage-house. At the convent, a well-built stone edifice of 2 stores, 20 to 25 girls are instructed. There are two annual fairs, one held in March and the other in Sept. - In this S. there are nearly 900 families. Situated on lowlands suitable for agriculture, it was built on part of the seigneury given in 1736 to Thomas-Jacques Taschereau. It was inhabited by colonists from the Beaupré shore and from ÎLE D'ORLÉANS. Ste-Marie is one of the oldest settlements in the Beauce region, having celebrated its 250th anniversary in 1994.
During the 19th century, Ste-Marie retained its agricultural importance, but progressively became a regional service centre as the construction of the Québec Central railway sparked the development and settlement of its hinterland. From 1880 to 1940, the wood industry was a major part of its economy. The town now has prosperous industries in the food sector and in metalworking.
