The name "Antigo" comes from the Chippewa Indian name for the river that flows through the area, "Nequi-Antigo-sebi" meaning "spring river" or "evergreen."

The city was founded in 1876 by Francis A. Deleglise, accompanied by George Eckart. The city gained its charter in 1883.

Further Particulars of the Big Lumber Fire at Antigo—Matters are Considerably Mixed as to Actual Losses.

THE ANTIGO FIRE.
Complete and accurate information concerning the losses at the big lumber fire at Antigo yesterday, and the different parties interested has not been obtainable today. J. H. Wood left for Antigo this morning without having received further advices. D. L. Libbey also went up today to look after the interests of the Williamson & Libbey Lumber company, and members of the Paine Lumber company were this afternoon unable to give any additional information. The business arrangements of the different firms who sustained losses by the fire appear to be so complicated by different contacts for lumber and for sawing logs, that at present it seems impossible to ascertain just how much each has lost and to what extent they are secured. 1942 - Army Flier Killed In Antigo Crash
Antigo, Wis. - (UP) - The first serious accident since a preliminary glider training school was established here June 1, resulted in the death of Pvt. C. W. Stanford, Farmersville, Tex., this week.
He suffered burns Oct. 1 from which he died when the plane he was piloting crashed on the Joe Frisch farm near Antigo. Capt. Ross M. Clem of the school said that the cause of the crash had not been determined.
Frisch at two other farmers pulled Stanford from the flaming wreckage of his plane after watching it crash. The flyer was said to have been on a routine training flight.
