1964 - PLANE DOWN; BASEBALL STAR ABOARD.
Provo (UPI) - Wreckage of a light plane carrying Chicago Cubs star KEN HUBBS and a companion was found today on nearby Utah Lake.

Search officials said the new red and white, single-engine Cessna 172 owned and piloted by the second baseman crashed, apparently a few minutes after takeoff two days ago, a quarter mile south of Bird Island. HUBBS had taken off from Provo Airport in bad flying weather for a flight to Morrow Field near Colton, Calif.

A search plane spotted an object in the lake after a wide-spread, three state hunt was started for HUBBS' plane. A helicpoter later was sent to the lake and identified the object as HUBBS' plane.

He and a friend, DENNIS DOYLE, also of Colton, left Provo in HUBBS' plane at 10 a.m. Thursday. They were listed as missing Friday night after HUBBS' father had reported the plane had failed to arrive.
Search Begins.

A search started in Utah, Nevada and California at dawn for the missing single-engine Cessna 172, which HUBBS purchased last... Read MORE...
