1904 - FIRE AT SIOUX FALLS. BLAZE IN BUSINESS DISTRICT CAUSES A LOSS OF $40,000.
A fire early Thursday morning gutted the two-story building occupied by the ANTHONY Candy Company, at Sioux Falls, S.D., destroyed the entire stock of the company and seriously damaged the PHILLIPS block, adjoining. The PHILLIPS block belongs to ex-Senator PETTIGREW.
The fire started in the basement of the building of the ANTHONY Candy Company, and the fire department was required to fight hard for several hours before the flames were controlled. The ANTHONY Candy Company had a $30,000 stock. The total damage to this and the two buildings will reach fully $40,000. The loss is practically all covered by insurance.

Sioux Falls, a city, capital of Minnehaha co., S.Dak., on the Big Sioux River and on the Great Northern and other railroads, about 60 miles NNE. of Yankton. It has a government building, a Federal penetentiary, state school for deaf-mutes, Sioux Falls College, All Saints' School, Lutheran Normal School, and manufactures of agricultural implements, wind-mills, vehicles, creamery supplies, etc. There are extensive rock-quarries in the vicinity. Pop. in 1900, 10,266. The river here falls nearly 100 feet.
1910 - SHOE SHINE SAVES HIS LIFE.
SIOUX FALLS, S. D. - Suddenly remembering that he had just has his shoes shined, and not wishing to spoil the polish, "Jack" Thomas, a resident of one of the small mining camps in the Black hills, while en route home quite late at night on foot, decided not to walk through what he supposed was a puddle of water and mud, and thereby saved his life.

The supposed puddle was a hole in the ground nearly 100 feet in depth, caused by the caving in of a tunnel which a mining company had constructed at that depth under the highway along which Thomas was walking. When he approached the supposed puddle in the dim light Thomas for a moment intended to walk through it, as he was tired and did not care to take the extra steps necessary to walk around the large dark spot in the road. But, recollecting the polish which had been placed on his shoes a short time before, he decided to walk around the spot and save the shine.
