Durham, a post-village, capital of Durham co., N.C., 26 miles by rail N.W. of Raleigh. It has 13 churches, 3 banks, 4 newspaper offices, 2 colleges, and manufactures of tobacco, snuff, cheroots, cotton, furniture, marble, granite, knitted goods, &c. Pop. 5485. General Sherman and General Johnston concluded a treaty at Durham at the end of the civil war. Pop. in 1890, 5485.

1897 - BIG FIRE IN DURHAM.
News of a big fire in Durham reached Statesville yesterday. It is said the fire originated in a leaf tobacco warehouse and the report was that 20 tobacco factories and warehouses, 15 dwellings and 8 stores, and 6,000,000 pounds of leaf tobacco were burned. The fire departments of Raleigh and Greensboro went to the assistance of the Durham fire department.

Durham, N. C., May 3. - Fire destroyed the Hotel Carolina, a four story frame structure located in the center of the city, entailing a loss of $175,000, fully covered by insurance. There were 50 or 75 guests, all of whom escaped without injury.

It has manufactures of tobacco, snuff, cheroots, cotton, knitted goods, fertilizers, dye-stuffs, etc. Trinity College is located here. Near here General J. E. Johnston surrendered to General Sherman on April 26, 1865, an event which virtually closed the Civil War. Pop. in 1900, 6679.
