Gulfport, Harrison, MS
Gulfport was incorporated on July 28, 1898. Gulfport was founded by: William H. Hardy who was president of the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad (G&SIRR) that connected inland lumber mills to the coast, and later on, joined by Joseph T. Jones who later took over the G&SIRR, dredged the harbor in Gulfport, and opened the shipping channel to the sea.

Gulfport was incorporated on July 28, 1898

Gulfport, a banking post-town of Harrison co., Miss., on the Louisville and Nashville and the Gulf and Ship Island Rs., 13 miles SW. of Biloxi. It has canning-industries, lumber- and other mills, machine-shops, manufactures of fertilizers and cotton-seed oil, etc., and extensive trucking interests. Pop. in 1900, 1060.

Biloxi, January 18. Members of the jury in the case of Ben Collins, charged with murder, who were locked down in the jury rooms of the courthouse during the fire, consider themselves fortunate in having escaped death in the conflagration that destroyed Harrison County’s courthouse. On the jury from a special venue were seven men from Biloxi and vicinity, these being Judge T.H. Gleason, Dan Peacock, Joe Ott, Willie Jones, Ed Fowler, Leo Ohr and J.A. Coody the latter residing in the Back Bay section.

Judge Gleason lost his coat in the fire, but declares that he is glad to have escaped without a more serious loss.

1929 - Four Killed at Grade Crossing In Mississippi
GULFORT, Miss., Jan. 1. - (AP) - Four persons were killed, two injured seriously and one slightly hurt when an automobile in which they were riding was struck by a Louisville and Nashville east-bound passenger train at the 39th Avenue crossing here last night.
The dead are:
JOSEPH P. McNAMEE, operator of a meat market in Gulfort.
Mrs. CORRINE McMAMEE, his wife.
Miss MARY McMAMEE, 19, their daughter.
Mrs. INEZ DUCKWORTH, wife of Hobart Duckworth, flagman of the Gulf and Ship Island division of the Illinois Central Railroad.
The injured are:
Arthur D. Ludwig, Gulfport carpenter, and Miss Hazel Thompson, niece of Ludwig.
A young son of Duckworth was reported slightly injured. The condition of Ludwig and Miss Thompson was undetermined.
