1854 - Bowling Green
Bowling Green, a flourishing post-village capital of Warren county, Kentucky, on Barren river, an affluent of Green river, 146 miles S. W. from Frankfort. It is situated at the head of navigation, and is a place of active trade, particularly in pork and tobacco. The river has been made navigable in all stages of water for steamboats of medium size, several of which make regular passages between this place and Louisville. Much attention has been directed to manufactures at this place. It has 1 iron foundry, 1 woollen and 1 candle factory, and several mills. A newspaper is issued here. Population in 1853, 2500.

1891 - UNDER THE WHEELS. A Car Repairer Killed in the Yards at Bowling Green
Bowling Green, KY - Sept 4 -(Special) - At 8 o'clock this morning, Joseph Newton, a car repairer, while at work on a damaged car in the L & N yards here, was crushed in such a horrible manner between two cars that his death was the matter of only a little time. He was at work at one end of a car standing in the yard, when another train backed against the car on which he was at work, and caused the accident. Newton was thirty years of age, was married and the father of four children. He had been in the employ of the L & N for a number of years.

Bowling Green, a city, the capital of Warren co., Ry, is on the Barren River, and on the Louisville & Great Southern Railroad, 114 miles S. by W. from Louisville, and 71 miles N. by E. from Nashville. One branch of the rail road connects it with Nashville, and another with Memphis, and, being at the head of navigation, it is an important shipping-point. It contains a college, a national bank, 2 other banks, a woollen-factory, several mills, a foundry, a Catholic academy, 11 churches, and gas-works and water-works. Two weekly newspapers are published here. P. (1890) 7803.

Bowling Green, a city, the capital of Warren co., Ky., is on the Barren River and on the Louisville and Nashville R., 71 miles N. by E. of Nashville. It is at the head of navigation, and is an important shipping point. It contains tobacco- and carriage-factories, flouring-mills, distilleries, etc., and has one of the largest horse-markets in the state. Oil and natural gas are found here. The Southern Normal School, Potter College, Ogden College, and other collegiate institutions are located here. Pop. in 1900, 8226. It was an important strategic point in the early part of the Civil War.
