Tallahassee, a city, capital of Florida, and seat of justice of Leon county, 194 miles E. from Mobile, 130 miles from Pensacola, and about 25 miles N. from the Gulf of Mexico. The site is comparatively elevated. The city is laid out in rectangular blocks, with several public squares. It contains the state house, court house, jail, a United States land-office, and churches of the Presbyterians, Methodists, and Episcopalians ; 2 newspaper offices, and several seminaries. Springs of good water abound in the vicinity. The adjacent country is very productive, and is the most populous part of the state. Tallahassee is connected by a railroad about 26 miles long with the seaport of St. Marks.

Tallahassee, a banking city, capital of the state of Florida, and seat of justice of Leon co., on the Georgia, Florida and Alabama and other railroads, 165 miles W. of Jacksonville and 26 miles N. of the Gulf of Mexico... It is laid out in rectangular blocks, with fine shaded streets, and has the Florida State College, Florida Normal and Industrial College (for colored), the Leon County Academy, and several libraries. The city's industries are represented by cotton-compresses and cotton-seed oil mills, cigar and ice-factories, etc. It is in a cotton, tobacco, and sugar region. Pop. in 1900, 2981.

1956 - THUNDERCLOUD CAUSED TYNDALL JETS TO COLLIDE. CAPT. WILLERFORD'S BODY FOUND IN PLANE WRECKAGE.
Tallahassee, Fla., Sept. 25 (AP) - The death toll in the crash of two jet planes being evacuated from the path of Hurricane Flossy rose to five today with discovery of the body of CAPT. ROBERT D. WILLERFORD of Tyndall Field.

He died in the wreckage of his plane after it had collided in flight with a second jet which landed on an isolated house 12 miles east of here, killing an expectant mother and her three small children.

The pilot of the other plane, LT. RODERICK ADAMS of Macon, Miss., parachuted to safety and was only slightly hurt. His abandoned craft struck the home of MRS. MARY ELLA WALKER, 23-year-old Negro mother, killing her and PHILIP, JR., 3, DOROTHY, 2, and MARY LEE, 1.

The small frame house of the WALKERS burned to the ground. The father, Philip Walker, a laborer employed by the city of Tallahassee, was at work at the time.
