It was in the first week of August, 1881 when George Chaffey, a Canadian engineer, viewed the wastes known as the Cucamonga Desert and decided that this patch of land, if properly watered, could become productive and profitable. George and his brother William bought the "San Antonio lands," 6,218 acres with water rights for $60,000. This was the nucleus of their new model colony. They subsequently expanded to the Southern Pacific Railroad tracks on the south. On the north, they took in the Kincaid Ranch at San Antonio Canyon, an all-important source of water.

The Ontario Colony lands were quickly surveyed and went on sale in November, 1882...

1895 - Ontario
Ontario, a post-village of San Bernardino co, Cal, about 18 miles W. of San Bernardino. It is on the Southern Pacific Railroad. It has a bank, planing- and grist-mills, and general stores, Pop. in 1890, 683.
1960 - BOB YEAKEL, 2 SONS DIE IN PLANE CRASH. AIRCRAFT HITS CAR, FREEWAY.
Ontario, Calif. (UPI) - BOB YEAKEL, prominent Southern California businessman, and four other persons including two of YEAKELS' sons, were killed Thursday night when his small plane crashed on the crowded San Bernardino Freeway.

All four persons in the plane piloted by YEAKEL, who called himself the "Lucky Dutchman," were killed as well as a fifth person who was in an auto which crashed into the flaming wreckage.

YEAKEL along with his brothers was one of the area's biggest auto dealers. He unsuccessfully ran for Los Angeles mayor in 1957.

San Bernardino County Deputy Coroner W. H. Georgenton said the families of the victims made positive identification.
They were identified as YEAKEL, 41; his sons, KENNETH, 22, and ROBERT, 13, both adopted, and businessman JOSEPH D. TAYLOR of Newport Beach. The auto passenger killed was JOSE CASTAMADA, 48, a Mexican national who was an itinerant farm worker.
