Sharon was settled in 1795, incorporated as a borough on October 6, 1841, and incorporated as a city on December 17, 1918. The city operated under the Pennsylvania third-class city code until 2008, at which point it adopted a home rule charter under which the elected position of mayor was replaced with a hired city manager and financial officer.

Initially a center of coal mining, Sharon's economy transitioned to ironmaking and steelmaking and other heavy industry following the beginning with the arrival of the Erie Extension Canal in the 1840s.

Sharon, a thriving post-borough of Mercer county, Pennsylvania, on Shenango creek and the Erie canal, 16 miles W. from Mercer, and very near the boundary of Ohio. It has several stores and mills. Pop. in 1850, 541.

1871 - Killed by a Pencil
A Mr. Bonacher, of Sharon, Penn., recently slipped and fell, and the point of a lead pencil which he carried in his pocket penetrated his side, causing almost instant death.

Sharon, a post-borough in Hickory township, Mercer co., Pa., on the Shenango River and the Erie & Pittsburg Railroad, at the S.E. terminus of the Mahoning division of the Atlantic & Great Western Railroad, 21 miles N.N.W. of New Castle, 14 miles N.E. of Youngstown, O., and 41 miles S.S.W. of Meadville. It is the largest town in the county, and contains a national bank, a savings-bank, 2 other banks, a high school, 3 newspaper offices, 7 churches, 2 rolling-mills, and 2 foundries. One daily newspaper is published here. Large quantities of coal are mined near this place. Pop. in 1880, 5684; in 1890, 7459.

1902 - BURIED IN MOLTEN STEEL. HORRIBLE ACCIDENT AT SOUTH SHARON IRON WORKS.
Sharon, Pa., Dec. 4. - Two men are dead, two are not expected to recover and one other is in a serious condition as the result of one of the worst accidents in the history of the South Sharon works of the Union Steel company. Among the injured is JAMES LLOYD, superintendent of the open hearth department. He was badly burned, but physicians state that he will recover.

Two of the victims are lingering between life and death, and the attending physicians say they cannot survive more than a few hours.
One of the ponderous ladles conveying forty tons of molten steel was started on its way along the traveling crane over the open hearth furnaces. Slowly the great vessel moved until just over the heads of the workmen standing below, who were awaiting disposition of the metal, when it was seen to tilt violently and empty a portion of the contents directly upon the heads of the men at work below.

Sharon, a banking post-borough of Mercer co., Pa., on the Shenango River and on the Erie and other railroads, 41 miles SSW. of Meadville. It is extensively engaged in coal-mining and has large steel- and iron-works, foundries and rolling-mills, boiler- and machine-shops, and manufactories of chains, nails, spokes, stoves, horse-collars, etc. The Hall Institute is located here. Pop. in 1880, 5684 ; in 1890, 7459 ; in 1900, 8916.

1907 - TRACTION CARS COLLIDE. PASSENGERS ARE SERIOUSLY SHAKEN BUT NONE ARE MUCH INJURED.
Sharon, Pa., Oct. 6. - Four passengers were injured in a collision between a Youngstown street car and a local traction car here yesterday.
The injured are:

C. A. MURRAY, Sharon.
DAN MADILIN, Hubbard, O.
ELIAS ANDERSON, Sharon.
None was seriously hurt. Both cars were damaged.
The collision was caused by the Youngstown car stopping to let an electric freight car pass and the local car which was following crashed into it. The seventy-five passengers were severely shaken up.
