The history of Franklin Township and the Raritan Valley was largely influenced by the Dutch settlers who came around 1650. They settled in this area by trading and bargaining for land with the Raritan Indians.
No document exists to prove conclusively whether the Township was named for William Franklin, Governor of New Jersey from 1762 to 1776, or Benjamin Franklin.

1915 - JERSEY HOTEL BURNED. PROPRIETOR AND WIFE HURT IN ESCAPING FROM FRANKLIN HOUSE.
Franklin, N. J., Jan. 16. - The Franklin House was destroyed by fire early today. The loss is estimated at $25,000. The fire is thought to have started from defective electric insulation. HARRY HARRISON, the proprietor, his family, and servants, all escaped. There were about a dozen persons in the hotel when the alarm was given.
MRS. HARRISON sustained a sprained ankle. Her husband was burned severely while rescuing some of his belongings.
ROBERT COLLINS, a fireman, was caught under a falling wall and injured seriously.

Franklin, N. J. (AP) - A father and four children were burned to death in a fire that all but destroyed their two story frame house.
The bodies were charred beyond recognition. Police Chief Herbert C. Irons said the fire was probably caused by an overheated wood stove in the kitchen.
