1892 - Narragansett Pier
NARRAGANSETT PIER

The unsurpassed location of Narragansett Pier as a watering-place of unexceptional advantages has attracted visitors here from all parts of the world, and made it a famous summer resort and a worthy rival of Newport. Situated at the head of Narragansett Bay, it faces the broad Atlantic, and on its magnificent stretch of sandy beach the breakers roll in with all the grandeur and sublimity that the most vivid imagination could conjure, and in their soothing roar the hum of business activity and the city's bustle is forgotten, and tired brains are lulled into the repose that brings them much needed rest with the same benefits as a trip across the ocean. Within a comparatively few years this noted resort has sprung into prosperity 'as from the stroke of an enchanter's wand', and to-day boasts about twenty magnificent hotels accommodating each from fifty to two hundred guests, and many elegant cottages are occupied. In fact there never has been such a demand for... Read MORE...

1900 - FIRE AT NARRAGANSETT. ROCKINGHAM HOTEL, THE CASINO, AND HAZARD BLOCK IN RUINS - LOSS $350,000.
Narragansett Pier, R. I., Sept. 12. - The Summer season here came to a sudden and disastrous end this afternoon through the complete destruction by fire of the great Rockingham Hotel, Sherry's beautiful and famous Casino, the Hazard block, the Knights of Pythias Hall, and a score of smaller buildings.

While the terrific gale undoubtedly aided the spread of the flames to a considerable extent it is probable that had the wind been in the opposite direction there would have been little left of this popular Summer resort.

The fire started in the upper part of the Rockingham shortly after noon, and within a few hours nearly all the adjacent buildings, including the Casino, had been destroyed. The loss is estimated at about $350,000, half of which is covered by insurance. The fire recalls the destruction of the Ocean House at Newport just three years ago, but was far more extensive.

No one as yet has come forward with any facts as to just how the fire started. The big hotel was... Read MORE...

1910 - Narragansett Hotel Has a Fire.
Special to The New York Times.

NARRAGANSETT PIER, R. I., July 7. - Fire started this afternoon in the roof of the Massasoit House, which is situated in the territory occupied by the Casino and many villas of the Summer colony. A southwest wind threatened for a time to fan it into a serious conflagration. The blaze, however, was soon extinguished after the firemen had cut a hole with their axes through the roof. A number of guests enjoying afternoon slumbers were speedily routed out of their rooms.

1921 - ARMED AIRPLANE SHOWERS BULLETS ON NARRAGANSETT - Unknown Craft Seriously Wounds Girl and Damages Launch
Providence, R. I., August 9. - Army officers, urged on by civil authorities, sought today for an armed airplane which yesterday sprayed Narragansett Bay with machine gun bullets, wounding a girl seriously and nearly sinking a launch.

The plane, marked with what appeared to be the figures "92" and a blurred letter, dived toward the launch as it lay at anchor. Five persons lounged in the boat.

As the plane came on, the sharp rattle of a machine gun was heard above the roar of the engine. The water was splashed by the hail of lead. The boat was directly in line with the fire and before the passengers could move, it had been sprayed, bullets tearing through its sides, letting the water rush through.

Four of the passengers escaped unharmed, but one of them, Grace Buxtom, was shot through both legs. The boat nearly sank several times during the eight miles run, despite frantic bailing by the occupants.

Earl Blakestaff, owner of the launch, said he believed the plane was a... Read MORE...
