1854 - Keeseville
Keeseville, a post-village of New York, on both sides of Au Sable river, and on the line between Clinton and Essex counties, 4 miles from Lake Champlain, and 150 miles N. from Albany. It contains 4 or 5 churches, an academy, a bank, 2 newspaper offices, and large manufactories of iron and nails, in which water-power is employed. Population, estimated at 2000.

Alonzo Baker, the well-known guide in the Adirondacks, was killed a few nights since by falling into the Ausable Chasm, near Keeseville.

Keeseville, keez'vil, a post-village of Clinton and Essex cos., N.Y., on both sides of the Au Sable River, 15 miles S. of Plattsburg, and 4 miles W. of Lake Champlain. It contains 6 churches, a national bank, an academy or union free school, a newspaper office, 2 rolling-mills, and manufactures of iron, nails, furniture, wagons, &c. Iron ore abounds in the vicinity. Pop. (1890) 2103. Near this place the Au Sable River flows through a deep chasm between vertical walls of Potsdam sandstone, and falls 90 feet.
