Oneida, a post-village in Lenox township, Madison co., N.Y., on the W. bank of Oneida Creek, and on the New York Central Railroad where it crosses the New York & Oswego Midland Railroad, 2 miles S. of the Erie Canal, 26 miles E. of Syracuse, 27 miles W. of Utica, and 58 miles S.E. of Oswego. It contains 5 churches, 2 fine public halls, a national bank, a state bank, a savings-bank, several flouring-mills and breweries, a steam knitting-mill, a planing mill, a foundry, manufactures of steam-engines and carriages, and printing-offices which issue 2 weekly newspapers. The streets are lighted with gas. Large quantities of hops and dairy-products are produced in the vicinity and exported from this place. Pop. in 1890, 6083.

The Village of Oneida was incorporated on June 20, 1848 as part of the larger Town of Lenox to its west, but years of friction among the different sections of town spurred this village to establish itself independently as the new Town of Oneida in 1896.

1901 - Bicycle Accident.
ONEIDA, June 15. - Miss Bertha Smith, a daughter of Mrs. Perry Smith of Oneida Castle, was seriously injured in a bicycle accident last night. Miss Smith is employed at Kenwood. She was coming home on her wheel, which in some manner became unmanageable and threw her to the ground. She struck against a tree and as she lay on the path was run over by another girl rider following. For about three hours she remained unconscious and it is feared that serious internal injuries were received. Dr. S. J. Wilson attended her. She passed a comparatively good night but was considered worse this morning. No bones were broken.

Oneida, a post-village of Madison co., N.Y., on the W. bank of Oneida Creek and on the New York Central and Hudson River and other railroads, 26 miles E. of Syracuse. It has flouring-, knitting- and planing-mills, and manufactures of steam-engines, toilers, steel-pulleys, carriages, chucks, cigars, and caskets. Large quantities of hops and dairy-products are produced in the vicinity and exported from this place. Oneida was formerly noted as the seat of a communistic association, called the Oneida Community (located about 2 miles from the village). This society was converted in 1881 into a joint-stock industrial company. Pop. in 1900, 6364.
