Cohoes, New York, USA - Cohoes, New York, USA - First Baptist Church

Settled in 1665 by the Dutch Van Schaick family on the colonial military road between Albany (10 miles [16 km] south) and Lake George, its name is of Algonquian origin and means "pine tree." Growth was influenced by the completion of the Erie Canal in 1825 and the construction of a dam at the falls, which provided abundant waterpower. An early textile centre, it has developed other manufactures, including paper products and laminates.

Cohoes, a flourishing manufacturing post- village of Albany county, New York, on the right bank of the Mohawk river, a little below Cohoes falls, on the Erie canal near its junction with the Champlain canal, and on the Troy and Schenectady railroad, 8 miles N. from Albany. The village contains churches of six denominations, 2 very extensive axe factories. 4 large cotton mills, employing some 1200 hands, 1 extensive linen- thread factory, besides various other manufacturing establishments.

Cohoes, ko-höz', a city of Albany co., N.Y., is situated on the W. bank of the Hudson River, at the mouth of the Mohawk, on the Erie Canal, and on the New York Central & Hudson River and the Delaware & Hudson Canal Company Railroads, 9 miles N. of Albany, and 3 miles above Troy. It contains 12 churches, a high school, a large graded school, 2 Catholic academies, 2 banks, and several hotels. Two daily and 2 weekly newspapers (1 in French) are published here. Its prosperity is derived mainly from its manufactures, which are very extensive. Here are 6 large cotton-mills, owned and operated by the Harmony Company; also about 40 knitting-mills, in which woollen and cotton knit goods of various kinds are made, several are factories, foundries, machine-shops, a paper-mill, a bobbin-factory, box-factories, a gas-, steam, and water pipe factory, a knitting-needle factory, a brewery, and other mills.
