1608 - The most famous bishop was Armand du Plessis who at 23 was appointed bishop in 1608, he declared Lucon "the vilest, muddiest and most unattractive bishopric in France” as the town had never recovered from the wars of religion.

Lucon, a town of France, in Vendee, 17 miles W. of Fontenay-le-Comte, about 8 miles from the Bay of Biscay, to which it is united by a canal 10 miles in length. It is the seat of a bishop and has a large mediaeval cathedral. Pop. in 1901, 0121.
