Saint-Henri, Montréal, Québec, Canada* - Saint-Henri, Montréal, Québec, Canada* -

Saint-Henri is a historic district of the Sud-Ouest borough of the city of Montreal.

The name of the district honors Henri II of the Holy Empire, the last Ottonian sovereign, as well as Father Jean-Henri-Auguste Roux, superior of the Sulpician seminary.

Due to the presence of the Lachine Canal and the passage of the main Canadian National railway line, Saint-Henri was, from the middle of the 19th century, one of the most important industrial districts in the country.

Various companies settled on the banks of the canal, to take advantage of its hydraulic power, among other things. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was home to the RCA Victor factory, where there were major recording studios, as well as the industrial tanneries Moseley and Ricker and Thomas Ecroyd, the Dominion Textile, the William Sewing Machine and the Canada Malting.

Saint-Henri was annexed to the City of Montreal in 1905. The neighborhood is bounded to the east by Atwater Avenue, to the south by the Lachine Canal, to the west by Highway 15 and to the north by the neighborhoods of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce and the city of Westmount.

The village of Saint-Henri was born in 1685, following the first census in Canada, ordered by Jean Talon who also ordered the creation of tanneries in this part of the country.
So, in 1685, a first tannery was opened near the outlet of the Saint-Pierre River, near the Saint-Jacques cliff. With its many small streams, this place was ideal, far from the city, thus limiting the diffusion of strong odors resulting from the treatment of hides and leather.
