Hampden is a town in Penobscot County, incorporated on February 24, 1794 from Sowerdaescook Plantation. From 1816 through 1832 it annexed land from Frankfort, Newburg, and Hermon.

1839 - Hampden

Penobscot county. Hampden lies on the west side of Penobscot, below and adjoining Bangor. It is also watered by the Sowadabscook river, a large and valuable mill stream. This is an important township in its commerce on the Penobscot, its manufacture of lumber, and its agricultural productions. It is one of the most flourishing towns on the river. The quantity of wheat produced by the farmers, in 1837, was 5,664 bushels. Population, 1830, 2,020; 1837, 2,520. Hampden is 6 miles S. from Bangor and 62 E.N.E. from Augusta.

Hampden is the most south-easterly town in. Penobscot County west, of the Penobscot River: having Bangor on the northeast, Herinon on the north, Orrington on the east—separated by the Penobscot. Newhurgh on the west, and Winterport, in Waldo County, on the south. The area is 23,040 acres. The surface is rolling rather than billy. The soil is favorable for agriculture. Hermon Pond lies on the north-west corner, with which are nearly connected two smaller ponds, Stetson and Patten, lying wholly within the town. Through these ponds flows the Soadabscook, entering the Penobscot at Hampden Village. The principal stream beside this is the west branch of the Soadabscook, rising in the south-west part of the town and emptying into Stetson Pond in the north-west. The principal water-power is near the mouth of the Soadabscook, at Hampden village.
