"El Caganer" toys are depictions of people (famous and otherwise) pooping. They are often hidden in corners of nativity scenes at Christmastime.
One theory is that the caganer represents fertility and the fertilization of the earth which yields food for us to eat. It is a symbol of good luck and the wish for a prosperous new year and good health.
Another theory is that the caganer represents the mischief and evil that is in all of us.
Eating 12 grapes at midnight on New Year’s Eve is both a tradition and a superstition in Spain. Twelve grapes are eaten, one for each stroke of midnight. If done, you will have good luck the following year. If not, you will have bad luck.
