This municipality is part of the Regional County Municipality of Haut-Richelieu which is located in the administrative region of Montérégie.
Located about fifteen kilometers southeast of Iberville, in the former municipal county of the same name – a position which justified the name of Saint-Alexandre-d'Iberville retained in 1855 for the local post office -, the municipality borders those of Sainte-Anne-de-Sabrevois and Sainte-Athanase.
Taken from the name of the parish officially created in 1850, although established for a long time in part of the former seigneury of Bleury, the toponym Saint-Alexandre commemorates the memory of a bishop of Alexandria (313-328), succeeded by Athanasius (around 290-373), patriarch of Alexandria from 328 to 373, although exiled on several occasions, fierce opponent of Arianism. However, the municipalities of Saint-Alexandre and Saint-Athanase are adjacent. A first group of English speakers, English and Irish for the most part, began to clear the territory around 1770, while the French speakers did not arrive until 1838.
