According to legend, Whitestone takes its name from a large offshore rock where tides from the East River and Long Island Sound met; in other accounts the name is in honor of the White Stone Chapel, erected by townsman Samuel Leggett in 1837. For a time, Whitestone was known as Clintonville, after NYC mayor and NY State Governor DeWitt Clinton, who lived in the area.

1890 - PLEASURE SEEKERS DROWN - A Rowboat Capsizes and Five Occupants Perish.
A shocking drowning accident by which five lost their lives, occurred recently off Whitestone, Long Island, N. Y. The employes of the Schaeffer Brewing Company of New York were holding their annual excursion at Stimmel's Pavilion at Whitestone.

While the music and dancing were in progress in the pavilion, a party including JOHN LOGAL, HERMAN HUNG, MARUICE STADLER, MARIE PUNTZ, BERTHA SCHOOP and THERESA LOGAL, hired a boat and started out into the bay. Before they had gone a great distance some persons on the shore were startled to hear the women in the boat screaming. The next instant the boat was soon to upset, and all the occupants were thrown into the water.

An eye witness of the terrible occurrence from the shore saw one of the young women clinging to one of the men, who struggled desperately to keep himself and his female companion above water, when suddenly both threw up their hands and disappeared.

One of the first to go to the rescue of the drowning persons was a son... Read MORE...

WHITESTONE, L. I., Oct. 3. - Joseph H. Titus, fifty-eight years old, and Mrs. Wallace, his sister-in-law, aged fifty-five, wealthy residents of the shore, were rescued from drowning this afternoon by Henry C. Steffens, also a resident of this place.

Mr. Titus, Mrs. Titus, and Mrs. Wallace were about to take a sail in the former's yacht Truant, which was moored in front of the Titus home, about twenty-five yards from shore.

They were in the act of boarding the yacht from a small rowboat when the accident occurred. Mrs. Titus had been placed aboard the yacht. Mr. Titus, together with Capt. William Latham of the yacht, returned to the wharf with the small boat to get Mrs. Wallace. As the latter was getting in she slipped and fell, striking the gunwale.

This overturned the boat and threw the three occupants into the water. Henry Steffens who was fishing from a boat near by, saw the accident. He rowed to where the boat was capsized. Capt. Latham, who was an aged man, had managed... Read MORE...
