Lebanon, New Hampshire
Grafton county. This pleasant town on Connecticut river is 4 miles S. from Dartmouth College, 49 N.W. from Concord, and 90 N.W. from Portsmouth. Besides the Connecticut on its W. border, this town is watered by Mascomy river, running from E. to W. through its centre, and affording many valuable mill seats and a constant supply of water. The soil here is alluvial, the intervales on the Connecticut extending back from the river about half a mile. There are meadows or intervales on Mascomy river. The principal village is situated on a plain near the central part, at the head of the falls of Mascomy river. There are falls in the Connecticut in this town, which have been locked and canalled by a company, called the White River Company. Lyman's bridge connects this town with Hartford, Vt. A medicinal spring has been discovered. A lead mine has been opened, and there has been found on Enfield line, near the outlet of the Great pond, a vein of iron ore.

1854 - Lebanon
Lebanon, a flourishing post-village of Grafton county, New Hampshire, is situated on a plain at the head of the falls in the Mascomy river, near its confluence with the Connecticut river, and on the Northern railroad, 4 miles from its junction with the Vermont Central railroad, 65 miles N. W. from Concord. At Olcott's falls in the Connecticut at this place, there is a descent of about 40 feet in a mile, around which is a canal with locks, affording extensive water-power. The village is an important centre of trade, and the seat of considerable manufacturing. It contains a bank and several fine schools. Population of the township, 2136.

1869 - Clever Dog
Rev. C. A. Downs, of Lebanon, N.H., has a dog, which a few days ago, had a lively fight with a wood chuck, and the latter seized him by the cheek and refused to relinquish his hold. With remarkable presence of mind, his dogship repaired to a brook near by, and sousing the woodchuck under, held him there until he was drowned.

1887 - A TOWN SWEPT BY FIRE. EIGHTY BUILDINGS BURNED, INVOLVING A LOSS OF $300,000.
HANOVER, N. H., May 10. - The most destructive fire that Northern New Hampshire has ever known occurred in Lebanon this morning, breaking out in Mead, Mason & Co.'s furniture factory at 1 o'clock. The adjoining buildings, also occupied by Mead, Mason & Co., built of wood and filled with inflammable materials, were soon destroyed. The early failure of the water power pump, upon which great dependence was put for such emergencies, made a call for help from out of town necessary. The fire worked southerly, burning everything in that direction, including Kendrick & Davis's watch key factory, building, and storehouse, and C. M. Baxter's machine shop.

The fire in four hours had burned 80 buildings, including, besides those already mentioned, S. Cole & Sons' foundry and machine shops; Roger's woolen mill, formerly a sponge factory; B. T. 1895 - Lebanon
Lebanon, a post-village of Lebanon township, Grafton co., N.H., on the Mascoma River, about 4 miles from its mouth, and on the Northern Railroad of New Hampshire, 65 miles N.W. of Concord. It has 4 or 5 churches, a national bank, a savings-bank, a newspaper office, and a high school. The township, which is bounded on the W. by the Connecticut River, contains a village named West Lebanon, and has manufactures of farm-implements, machinery furniture, &c. Pop. of the township in 1890, 3763.

1901 - KILLED AT GRADE CROSSING. FOUR MEN STRUCK BY MONTREAL EXPRESS AT LEBANON, N. H., WITH FATAL RESULT.
Lebanon, N. H., July 21. - A carriage containing JAMES GOODWIN, of Hinsdale, Mass.; WILLIAM THURSTON, of Percy, N. H.; THOMAS BURNS, of Winooski, Vt.; and EDDIE McCABE, of Lebanon, was struck by the Montreal express on the Boston and Maine Railroad shortly after midnight and all four were instantly killed. The horse escaped with slight bruises.
GOODWIN and BURNS were weavers employed by the American Woolen Company. THURSTON had just finished work as a farmer here. He was married. McCABE was nineteen years old, employed by Carter & Rogers, of this place, and leaves a widow, mother and sister.

The team was hired by GOODWIN at Peter Stone's stables, about 7 o'clock for a drive to Enfield and GOODWIN was seen here with BURNS about 9 o'clock. It is not known where THURSTON and McCABE joined the party. It is evident that the party tried to cross in advance of the train. Lebanon, a banking post-village of Grafton co., N.H., on the Moscoma River, about 4 miles from its month, and on the Boston and Maine R., 65 miles by rail NW. of Concord. The township (town), which is bounded on the W. by the Connecticut River, has manufactures of farm- implements, machinery, woollens, electrical supplies, watch makers' tools, etc. Pop. of the town in 1900, 4965.
