1651 - (Cromwell, CT) - Originally part of the Mattabesset settlement, in 1651, the area became known as Middletown Upper Houses—being separated from Middletown by the Sebethe River.
J & E Stevens Co., which was formed in Cromwell in 1843, introduced the first firecracker pistol and became the largest maker of cast-iron toys in the U.S.
1851 - Cromwell incorporated, completing their separation from Middletown.
1854 - Cromwell
Cromwell, a post-township of Middlesex county, Connecticut, on the W. side of Connecticut river, about 25 miles N. N. E. from Hew Haven. Population, about 1100."
1886 - An old resident of Cromwell, Conn., has taken one hundred and eleven bodies of drowned persons from the Connecticut river in that vicinity.
1895 - Cromwell
Crom'well, a post-town of Middlesex co., Conn., on the W. bank of the Connecticut River, and on the Connecticut Valley Railroad, 12 1/ 2 miles S. of Hartford, and 2% miles N. of Middletown. It has a savings-bank, 3 churches, and manufactures of hammers, lamps, and iron toys. Pop. 1856.

Cromwell, a post-township (town) of Middlesex co., Conn., on the W. bank of the Connecticut River and on the New York, New Haven and Hartford R., 12 1/ 2 miles S. of Hartford. It has manufactures of hardware, toys, etc. Pop. in 1900, about 2031.
