Cedars (Les Cèdres)
A town on the north shore of the St-Lawrence opposite St-Timothée. (45.306N 74.053W) Previously called Cedarstown and Cedar Village.

According to the Jesuit historian Charlevoix, the name of Les Cèdres comes from the large cedars that were found at the foot of the rapids and in the shade of which the canoeists rested at the time of the clearing.

  • The Municipality of Les Cèdres is the oldest parish organization in the Presqu’île region. Indeed, it was on October 12, 1702 that the seigneury of Soulanges was granted to Pierre-Jacques Joybert de Soulanges.
  • 1752 - Église de Saint-Joseph-de-Soulanges is established at Les Cèdres
  • In August 1760, Canadian boatmen who were to lead the English army towards Montreal, threw themselves into the rapids, dragging with them the enemy artillery .
  • 1832 - The Village of the Cedars (Soulange seigniory),
    is charmingly seated on the bank of the St. Lawrence, 5 miles from Pointe des Cascades, being the point of rendezvous for all boats passing up or down the river, and, having an established ferry to the opposite seigniory of Beauharnois, it is a place of great resort both for travellers and traders. - This pleasant village contains a well built church and about 150 houses, of which 6 are built with stone, and there are a school and two corn-mills; the mill, called Longueuil's Mill, has ground 6,500 bushels of grain in 4 months. - The appearance of the waters and of the rich and verdant island around which they wind their course, exhibits an assemblage uncommonly interesting, and the glistening rapids of the Coteau du Lac give a lively termination to the scene. - At Pointe des Cascades, where the steamboat lands passengers, are a few houses and stores and a convenient corn-mill.
