About Saint-Marc-sur-Richelieu
The municipality of Saint-Marc-sur-Richelieu was founded as a parish in 1792 and was legally constituted in 1855 on a territory of nearly 60 square kilometers in the administrative region of Montérégie. It is part of the regional county municipality of La Vallée-du-Richelieu.
Saint-Marc-sur-Richelieu is a rural municipality with an agricultural vocation, rich in fertile land, with prosperous farms, sugar bushes and famous inns.
Historically, the municipality of Saint-Marc came into being as part of the expansion of trade in these places towards the end of the 18th century, when a large number of merchants from New York traveled through the region to support the inhabitants and established many warehouses all along the Richelieu. They bring back local products from hunting and agriculture on flat-bottomed barges, sailing barges (barges used to unload ships) which are steered by long pikes, as well as on wooden rafts pulled by horses from the banks of the river. We exported potash, barley cereals and peas and it was in these circumstances that Saint-Marc was born. grandquebec.com
