It lies 12 miles N.W. from Burlington, and 16 S.S.W. from St. Albans. The lake is fordable a considerable part of the year on the Vermont side. This town was formerly a part of North Hero, and was separated from it in 1788. First settled, 1784. Population, 1830, 717. South Hero contains an area of about 9,065 acres of level land of an excellent soil. Its basis is limestone. It is supposed that all the lands of this island county were once covered by the waters of the lake, as clam shells are found incorporated with the rocks in the highest places. The scenery around these islands is beautiful. This vicinity was a favorite resort for the Indians, as appears from a large number of their implements found on the islands. 1960 - 7 HIGH SCHOOL CLASSMATES KILLED IN VERMONT CRASH.
South Hero, Vt. (UPI) - Gov. Robert T. Stafford has asked for a report on a crash that killed seven youths who graduated from high school together two months ago.

The youths, all from Winooski, Vt., were killed Sunday when their 1954 sedan went out of control after coming over a hill, skidded along the slippery road for 500 feet and slammed sideways into a three-foot-thick maple tree.

All were thrown from the car, and six died instantly. The seventh, MAURICE SOUTIERE, 19, believed to be the driver, died minutes after being admitted to Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington, about 10 miles from this Lake Champlain island town.

The youths, who had grown up together in Winooski, a community of 7,000, were returning from Rouses Point, N.Y., where they had gone to spend Saturday evening.

The accident was the worst in recent Vermont history.

The victims, besides SOUTIERRE, one of 13 children of a widowed mother, were identified as EDWARD JOSEPH FOLEY, 19; RONALD R. ROGERS, 20;... Read MORE...
