Montville, a post township, is situated on the west bank of the Thames, 7 miles from its mouth, the same distance from New-London, and 35 miles from Hartford; bounded on the north by Bozrah and Norwich, on the east by the river Thames, which separates it from Preston and Groton, on the south by Waterford, on the west by Lyme, and northwest by Colchester. Its average length from east to west, is about 8 miles, and its average breadth about 5 miles, comprising about 40 square miles...

1836 - Montville
MONTVILLE originally, belonged to New London. It was incorporated as a distinettown in 1786. It is bounded north by Bozrah and Norwich, west by Salem and Lyme, east by the river Thames, and south by Waterford. Its length from east to west is about eight miles, and its breadth averages about five miles. This township is embraced within the granitic district, bordering on the sea coast, is uneven, being hilly and stony. The soil is a coarse, dry, gravelly loam, considerably strong and fertile, affording good grazing.

The road from New London to Norwich passes through this town, is a turnpike and is said to be the first which was ever made in the United States. " The former road was perfectly fitted to force upon the public mind the utility of turnpike roads. As New London is the port of entry for Norwich, the merchants of Norwich must often visit it upon business; and the convenience of dispatch in cases of business I need not explain. Montville, Connecticut
New London county. Montville was taken from New London in 1786. The surface is hilly and stony; the soil a dry, gravelly loam, strong and fertile. It lies on the W. side of the river Thames, 35 miles S.E. from Hartford, 8 N. from New London, and 7 S. from Norwich. The town has a good water power and contains 3 cotton and 2 woolen factories, and an oil mill. Population, 1830, 1,964.

This, and a large tract of country lying north and east of it, formerly belonged to the Mohegans, a tribe of Indians once celebrated for their warlike prowess and friendship to the English. In Montville is a tract reserved by the state for that tribe, "on the land of their fathers."

Mont'ville, a post-village of New London co., Conn., in Montville township, about 36 miles S.E. of Hartford. The township is bounded on the E. by the Thames River, and is intersected by the New London Northern Railroad, on which is Montville Station, 6 miles N. of New London. Pop. of the township in 1890, 2344.

The town is bounded on the E. by the Thames River and is intersected by the Central Vermont R. Pop. of this town in 1900, 2395; of the village, about 950. Montville has manufactures of cotton and woollen-goods, paper, twine, and rope.
