Coventry, Kent, RI

Coventry was first settled by English colonists in the early 18th century, when the town was part of Warwick. Since the area was so far away from the center of Warwick, the section that became Coventry grew very slowly. However, by 1741, enough farmers (about 100 families) had settled in the area that they petitioned the General Assembly of Rhode Island to create their own town. The petition was granted, and the new town was named "Coventry", after the English city.

1819 - Coventry
Coventry is an interior manufacturing post township, situated in the northwestern section of the county, 10 miles southwest from Providence; bounded northerly on the towns of Cranston, Scituate and Foster, easterly on Warwick, southerly on West-Greenwich, and westerly on the State of Connecticut.

The length of the township, from east to west, is about 12 miles, and its mean breadth about 6 miles, comprising an area of 72 square miles; being one of the largest towns in the State.

The principal section of this township presents primitive rugged features, being hilly and rocky. Some sections, however, are level, and possess a sandy soil. In the granitic sections the soil is a primitive gravelly loam, strong and fertile, being well adapted to grazing and affording good crops of Indian corn, rye, potatoes, &c.

Kent county. This is a very large township, extending to the north line of Connecticut, and admirably watered by numerous ponds and by Flat river, an important branch of the Pawtucket. Coventry has long been noted for the number and variety of its manufactures, particularly of cotton and wool. The soil of the town is well adapted to agricultural pursuits: it is well improved, and a large amount of the products of the dairy, &c., is annually produced. There are a number of pleasant villages in Coventry, all of which are flourishing, both in manufacturing and trade. This town was distinguished for its patriotism during the revolutionary contest. Coventry was incorporated in 1742. It lies 10 miles S.W. from Providence and 8 N.W. from East Greenwich. Population, 1830, 3,851.

Here are manufactures of cotton prints, &c. Coventry township contains villages named Anthony, Greene, and Coventry Centre. Pop. of the township, 5068.
