Upton, Massachusetts
Worcester county. Upton was taken from Mendon, Sutton, and Hopkinton in 1735. The surface of the town is plain land, and partly rough and hilly, with a strong soil capable of yielding good crops of grain and hay. Much attention has been paid to fruit trees in this town, and many fine orchards of various kinds of fruit have been the result. West river, a branch of the Blackstone, rises from a pond in Upton, and furnishes a power for a number of mills. The manufactures consist of woolen goods, boots, shoes, leather, straw bonnets, sashes and blinds: annual value, about $175,000.
This pleasant town lies 35 miles W.S.W. from Boston and 15 S.E. from Worcester. Population, in 1830, 1,155; 1837, 1,451.

This town is not an original grant, but was taken from Mendon, Sutton, and Hopkinton. It was incorporated by the general court in 1735. The first church was formed in this town soon after its incorporation, and Rev. Thomas Weld ordained their pastor. He remained a few years with the people, when he was dismissed, and succeeded by Rev. Elisha Fish, (from Stonington, Conn.,) ordained in 1751. He died in 1795. The next and the present pastor, Rev. Benjamin Wood, was ordained in 1796. The society of Baptists originated about 1750, and the next year Rev. Abraham Bloss was ordained their teaching elder. This town presents a varied surface, changing from smooth to rough, and from hilly to more level ground. The soil is generally good, and is pretty well watered. A small stream, known by the name of West river, passes through the west part of the town, and flows into the Blackstone in the lower part of Uxbridge. Upton, so called from its situation, is a long and narrow town in the southeast part of Worcester County, of broken and hilly aspect, with a good strong soil adapted to cereals, pasturage and arboriculture. It is 36 miles southwest of Boston with which it is connected by the Grafton and Upton and Boston and Albany railroads. Upton (centre) and West Upton are the villages, also post-offices and railroad stations. Westborough lies on its north; Hopkinton on the northeast; the latter and Milford on the east; Mendon and Northbridge on the south; and the latter and Grafton on the west.
The assessed area is 13,040 acres, of which 4,162 acres are woodland. The principal rock is gneissic. In the eastern part of the town is a mineral spring. In the northwest is a long ridge of land called "George's Hill." George's (or Miscoe) Brook flows about its western base, entering the town near the western village, where it furnishes valuable power. Peppercorn Hill, in the east, commands a fine view...
