Winchester, Middlesex, MA

Until the middle of the 19th century, parts of Arlington, Medford, Cambridge, and Woburn comprised what is now Winchester. The movement toward incorporation of what, by this time, was called South Woburn was likely precipitated by the rise of the Whig Party in Massachusetts. Upon the signature of then Governor Briggs, the town of Winchester was officially incorporated on April 30, 1850. kids.kiddle.co

1870 - A man by the name of Wing, at work in the bottom of a well at Cutter village, in Winchester, Mass.,
suddenly found himself sinking in the quicksand to his knees, and with all his efforts he was unable to extricate himself. The well had been sunk to the depth of thirty feet, and Wing, being heavy, all efforts to hoist him out were unavailing, the work being carried on through the whole of the night, and much excitement prevailing on his account. Two professional miners were procured in Boston the next morning to try their skill, and his release was finally effected by the use of long-bitted augers, with which the operators bored into the clay around his legs, and in this manner so relieved the pressure upon them that, at about 1:30 in the afternoon, he was taken out, in a very exhausted condition, having been there nearly twenty-four hours.
