1870 - A one armed newspaper carrier in Everett, Mass., has at odd times built himself a two-story French-roofed house, 26 by 32. All the work was done by him except raising the frame, setting the door and window frames, and the plastering.

Everett is a flourishing young town having an attractive site in the easterly part of Middlesex County, three miles northwest of Boston, and on two branches of the Boston and Maine Railroad system. It is bounded north by Malden, east by Revere and Chelsea; south by the Mystic River, which divides it from the Charlestown district of Boston; west by Somerville and Malden; the former also separated from it by the Mystic.

The assessed area is 1,824, acres, including twelve acres of groves. There are also numerous trees, mostly elms from 10 to 20 years old, along the streets. From the higher parts of the town there are delightful views of surrounding towns, of Boston Harbor and of the ocean. The geological formation is upper conglomerate, drift and the St. John's group. The soil is a sandy loam in some parts, in others clayey. It is well adapted to the production of garden vegetables, fruits and flowers, to which its agricultural space is largely devoted.

Everett, a post-village of Middlesex co., Mass. 3 miles by rail N. of Boston. It has 8 churches, public schools, a young ladies’ seminary, a furniture-factory, a pottery: * fire-proof-roofing factory, a sand-box and car-brake factory, a baby-carriage-factory, iron-works, chemical-works a knitting-factory, a varnish-factory, and 2 newspaper offices. Pop. in 1870, 2220; in 1880, 4159; in 1890, 11,068.

1908 - BLOCK OF BUILDINGS DESTROYED.
Everett, Mass., Jan. 27. - Nearly an entire block of buildings, including the Masonic Hall, was destroyed by fire early in the day, with a loss of about $75,000. The local department was unable to cope with the flames and help was summoned from Chelsea and Malden.

1908 - PASSENGERS CUT BY GLASS AS CARS CRASH
The passengers of two outward-bound electrics were thrown into confusion as the two cars collided yesterday afternoon in Glendale square, Everett. Fortunately no one was seriously hurt, although several were cut by flying glass. The motormen stuck by their posts and probably averted what might have been a serious accident, as each car slid along the slippery rails with considerable momentum just prior to the crash.

The front vestibule of the Boston Elevated Malden car was smashed and three or four windows broken. The Chelsea-Malden car suffered the loss of all the windows on one side. Each car had come to the required stop in the square and each motorman was waiting for the other to take the switch at the curve on Ferry street to go to Malden. Both cars started at the same moment and banged into each other as they were making the switch.

Everett, a residential and manufacturing city of Middlesex co., Mass., 3 miles N. of Boston, on the Boston and Maine R. It has manufactures of steel and structural iron, gas, coke, automobiles, hoots and shoes, mineral- waters, wagons, varnishes, chemicals, druggists' fittings, etc. Among the public institutions are the Parlin and Shute Memorial libraries. The Home School for Young Ladies is located here. Pop. in 1890, 11,068; in 1900, 24,336.
