Middlesex county. 20 miles N.W. from Boston and 5 N. from Concord. Incorporated, 1805. Population, 1837, 596. It is bounded S.E. by Concord river. This is a poor town, and its manufactures are very trifling.

Carlisle was originally a part of Concord.

The soil is unfavorable to agriculture, and yet this is the principal dependence of the inhabitants.

The party divisions in Concord, occasioned principally by the religious controversies from 1740 to 175O, were the cause of the formation of several separate societies and districts. Carlisle was incorporated as a district of Concord in 1754. The first object of the inhabitants was the selection of a suitable place for erecting their meeting house. After a great many fruitless attempts to fix the location, a committee was appointed to petition the general court that the district might be set back to the town of Concord, with all their former privileges. An act for this purpose was passed by the general court, in 1757. After the dissolution of “Old Carlisle,” no definite attempts were made to obtain a separation till about fifteen years afterwards. During this time, the occasional preaching of the gospel had been supported, and a meeting-house was begun as early as 1760, though not completed till 1783. Carlisle, a post-township of Middlesex county, Massachusetts, 20 miles N. W. from Boston. Population, 632.

Carlisle is a small farming town of 130 dwelling-houses and 526 inhabitants, situated in the central part of Middlesex County, about 20 miles northwest of Boston. Carlisle station, on the Lowell Branch of the Old Colony Railroad, is in the northwest part of the town; and Bedford Station on the Boston and Lowell Railroad, accommodates the southeast portion. The post-office is at the centre.

The general form of the town is oval. Chelmsford bounds it on the north, Billerica on the northeast, Bedford on the southeast, Oxford on the south, and Acton and Westford on the west. The assessed area is 9,571 acres. The principal settlement is at the centre, and consists of two churches (Congregational and Unitarian), a town-hall, school-house, stores, mechanics' shops, and a few dwelling-houses. Farm-houses are scattered sparsely over the remainder of the territory.
