Burlington, Massachusetts
Middlesex county. This town is watered by Vine brook, a branch of the Shawsheen river. It lies 11 miles S.E. from Lowell, 10 N.E. from Concord, and 13 N.W. by N. from Boston. Population, 1837, 522. Some shoes are made here. The soil is light and suitable for the growth of rye and hops.

This little town is watered by Vine Brook, a branch of the Shawshine, which runs into the Merrimack, through Andover. Its soil is not rich, and its manufactures not extensive.

This town was incorporated in 1799. The land in this town is rather rough and hard to cultivate. There is a small stream in the town, called Vine brook, a branch of the Shawshine river, which flows into the Merrimac in the town of Andover. There is a Congregational church in the central part of the town. In 1837 there were 5,800 pairs of shoes manufactured in this town, valued at $4,900. There were twelve males and nine females employed in this business. Population, 522. Distance, 10 miles north east of Concord, 11 S. E. from Lowell, and 13 from Boston.

Burlington is a small agricultural town in the easterly section of Middlesex County, about 10 miles north by northwest from Boston. The nearest railroad station is Woburn Centre, three miles distant. The boundaries are Billerica and Wilmington on the northwest and northeast, Woburn on the east and southeast, Lexington on the southwest, and Bedford on the west.

The assessed area of the town is 7,312 acres, including 1,888 acres of woodland. The trees are chiefly oak, maple, pine and some birch. The surface is broken and uneven ; and there are conspicuous eminences at the north, centre and south which afford admirable views. From Bennett Hill in the centre there is a fine view of Wachusett and the New Hampshire mountains. A beautiful stream called Vine Brook, an affluent of the Shawsheen River, winds through the southwest part of the town, affording water power for mills, and trout for the disciples of Walton.
