Belmont was established on March 10, 1859, by former citizens of, and land from the bordering towns of Watertown, to the south; Waltham, to the west; and Arlington, then known as West Cambridge, to the north.

Belmont is a beautiful suburban town in the southeasterly part of Middlesex County, about six miles northwest of Boston. Lexington adjoins it on the northwest, Arlington on the northeast, Cambridge on the east, Watertown on the south, and Waltham, separated in part by Beaver Brook, on the west. Its area is about 3,000 acres, not including highways. The population, in 1885, was 1,639, with 308 dwelling-houses. Its geological basis consists of sienite, dolorite and the St. John's group. The surface is finely diversified, and is embellished with many ornamental trees in great variety, well-cultivated orchards, farms and gardens. The number of fruit trees will exceed 20,000 ; and the hundred or so acres of natural woodland is reinforced by several groves and many groups, marshalled into relations of exceeding beauty by the landscape-gardener. 1936 - Fog Blankets New England, Due to Thaw - Woman Killed at R. R. Crossing; Mist Causes Accidents
BOSTON, March 10 (AP) - Fog blanketed New England today caused one death at a grade crossing, contributed to automobile accidents, halted airplane travel, and slowed shipping in harbors and in coastal lanes.
Fog in greater or less density, was general from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to points south of New York United States weather bureau officials said it was associated with melting snow. The fog resulted they said, from the contact of a layer of warm air overhead with cold air, chilled by melting snow, close to the ground.

At Belmont, Mass., Mrs. MARJORIE WRIGHT, 42, of Belmont apparently unable to see two approaching trains because of the fog, stepped from the path of one into another, and was killed.
