THE HEMINWAY AND BARTLETT SILK COMPANY, WATERTOWN, CONN.
"...Gen. Meritt Heminway (1800-1886) started his "M. Heminway and Sons Silk Co." in Watertown in 1846. The company was the first to produce thread on spools which then made sewing machines possible. He built the factory down Echo Lake Road just past Deland Field on the left sort of opposite Daveluy's Pizza. He also created the pond on Steele Brook just north of the factory which is still called Heminway Pond. The whole operation was powered by waterwheels.
The company prospered and the Heminway name became known around the world..." facebook.com Florence T Crowell's Historic Watertown Connecticut Photo Gallery
