Founded in 1848 as the Schenectady Locomotive Works, it later merged with several other locomotive manufacturers to become ALCO in 1901. ALCO was known for producing a wide range of steam and diesel locomotives that were used by railroads across the United States and around the world. The company played a significant role in the development of rail transportation during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
