In the mid 1600s, pro-birth measures were put in place to encourage population growth in New France. Allowances were granted to familes with ten or more children. Bonuses were provided to men who married before age 20 and to women who married before age 16. Free education was promised to the 26th child! (Yes, the 26th child.)
