What a quack! Sometimes pioneers were so desperate for a cure that they turned to a quacksalver, or quack for short. Quacks claimed to have miracle cures for all sorts of illnesses. Some of these cures contained unhealthy or even dangerous ingredients. Today we still call a doctor with questionable cures a quack.
