Stogie Today, cigars are sometimes referred to as stogies. As the pioneers traveled west, Conestoga wagon drivers frequently smoked cigars. They thought that the cigar would act as a filter and keep the dust out of their throats. So many wagon drivers smoked cigars that they eventually became known as "Conestogas," or stogies for short.
