Richard Silvester

CHURCH MEMBERSHIP: Admission to Dorchester church prior to April 1, 1834 implied by freemanship. On 13 March 1638/ 9 Richard Silvester for going with Smyth to get hands to a blank, was disfranchised and fined 2 pounds. MCHB 1:252. (The blank, or petition, was being circulated by John Smith for the purpose of 'combining with others to hinder the orderly gathering at a church at Waymouth & to set up another there, contrary to the orders here established).

Although he resided in Marshfield after his departure from Waymouth, Richard Silvester had several children baptized at the South Church in Scituate, in that part of Scituate would later become Norwell; presumably Richard and his wife had joined the church. This part of Scituate adjoined the northern part of Marshfield, so this church may have been more convenient to him than the Marshfield church; or perhaps it was more congenial to him, given his...Read full story
