1962 - The Cuban Missile Crisis was a tense 13-day standoff in October 1962 between the United States and the Soviet Union over the installation of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles from the U.S. coast. The crisis is considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war. It began when American spy planes discovered the missiles, leading to a U.S. naval blockade of Cuba and intense negotiations. The crisis ended when Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles in exchange for the U.S. promising not to invade Cuba and secretly agreeing to remove American missiles from Turkey.

In 1963, on November 22, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, while riding in a motorcade through Dealey Plaza. Johnson was sworn in as the 36th President of the United States shortly after Kennedy's death. George Harrington Billings, President of Billings & Co., a management consulting firm serving both Fortune 500 and development stage companies, died Friday, August 20, 2021, at his home in Falmouth, MA. The son of Elliot A. and Priscilla Robb Billings, he was 71. Mr. Billings grew up in Florida and summered in Falmouth, MA. He attended Phillips Academy at Andover and Brown University, from which he was graduated in 1972. He went on to receive an MBA from Harvard Business School. Mr. Billings was the first General Manager of the first commercial cellular market in the U.S. in Baltimore-Washington and later built out the first cellular network in Bryan-College Station, Texas. He was a pioneering executive in the satellite TV industry in the United States and Latin America.
