Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.
Invention The cell phone was invented by Martin Cooper of Motorola. On April 3, 1973, he made the first handheld mobile phone call with the Motorola DynaTAC. This device weighed 2.5 pounds and was 10 inches long, offering 30 minutes of talk time and requiring 10 hours to charge. The first commercial cell phone was released in 1983, revolutionizing communication and leading to the modern smartphones we use today.

Obituary
HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Rev. Stephen Robb Billings, of Haverford, Pa., died after a long illness at his vacation home in Falmouth, Mass., on July 1, 2015.

The son of Elliot A. and Priscilla Robb Billings, he was 74 years old.

As a youth growing up in Coral Gables, Fla., he occasionally entertained the notion that he might be called to the ordained ministry in the Episcopal Church. Only later did he come to understand that it was not a matter of his worthiness, but rather of God's purposes and Grace.

As he approached graduation from Yale University in 1963, he was prepared for graduate school there. Meanwhile, he was nominated to receive a one-year fellowship to seminary to test his vocation. He took a deferment from Yale, went to the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Mass., and then Clinical Pastoral Education at Worcester State (Mental) Hospital, which laid the foundation for a...Read full story
