Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

TOWNSEND: Lucille (Barbera) Thomas, 83. of Townsend, died Monday, November 16, 2020 at her home.

Mrs. Thomas was born in Chelsea, May 25, 1937, a daughter of Peter T. and Sophie (Sonietz) Barbera and has resided in Townsend for seventy years.

She leaves her husband of 64 years, Henry G. Thomas; four children, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

She was an avid student of Native American Culture, enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family.


Funeral arrangements will be held privately.

The Anderson Funeral Home, 250 Main Street, Townsend is assisting the family with arrangements.
