1945 - On September 2, 1945, World War II officially ended with the formal surrender of Japan. 1962 - The Cuban Missile Crisis was a tense 13-day standoff in October 1962 between the United States and the Soviet Union over the installation of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles from the U.S. coast. The crisis is considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war. It began when American spy planes discovered the missiles, leading to a U.S. naval blockade of Cuba and intense negotiations. Carolyn Sue “Suzie” Huffman, 76, of Stanley, North Carolina, and part-time resident of Punta Gorda, Florida, passed away unexpectedly, on Friday, January 22, 2021, in Punta Gorda. She was born on March 3, 1944 in Fairfield, Illinois to the late Harold and Doris Haegele Scheetz. Suzie graduated from Fairfield High School, class of 1962 and attended Eastern Illinois University where she studied liberal arts in hopes of becoming an educator. In 1966, she married her high school sweetheart and soulmate, Dan E. Huffman and together they raised two sons.

Suzie worked as a secretary for Allstate Insurance at their corporate headquarters for 14 years. After leaving Allstate, she began working for Kitchen Aid as an executive assistant, where she remained for 12 years until she left and went to work for Viskase. When she and Dan retired in June 2000, they started their own business together, H & H Enterprises. Two years ago the couple built a new home in Punta Gorda as their winter...Read full story
