Hedy started her acting career in Europe, gaining attention with her role in the Czech film 'Ecstasy' (1933), where she caused a stir with one of the first explicit nude scenes in mainstream cinema. Eager to escape her controlling first husband, a munitions manufacturer named Friedrich Mandl, Hedy fled to the United States.

She starred in numerous films alongside some of the biggest names in the industry, such as 'Algiers' (1938) with Charles Boyer and 'Boom Town' (1940) with Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy.
