Hudson was born around 1565, although the exact date and place of his birth remain uncertain. He made several voyages during his career, but the most notable ones were conducted under the sponsorship of the Dutch East India Company and the English Muscovy Company.
In 1607, Hudson made his first significant voyage under the Dutch East India Company. He set out in search of a northeastern passage to Asia by sailing around the northern tip of Russia. However, he encountered thick ice and harsh weather conditions, which forced him to abandon the attempt.
In 1609, Hudson undertook another journey, this time under the employ of the Dutch East India Company and the Dutch West India Company. He was tasked with finding a northwest passage
