Biography
Giovanni da Verrazzano, commonly known as Giovanni de Verrazzano or simply Verrazzano, was an Italian explorer and navigator who lived during the 16th century. He is best known for his exploration of the eastern coast of North America on behalf of the French crown.
Born around 1485 in Val di Greve, a town in what is now modern-day Tuscany, Italy, Verrazzano hailed from a noble family and received an excellent education. He developed a passion for exploration and maritime activities, becoming a skilled sailor and navigator.
In 1524, Verrazzano embarked on his most significant expedition, sailing westward across the Atlantic Ocean in search of a northwest passage to Asia. He was commissioned by King Francis I of France, who sought to expand French influence in the New World.
Verrazzano's voyage took him to the eastern coast of North America, and he is credited with being the first European to explore and map several areas along the Atlantic seaboard, including present-day North
