Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

Shirley D. Hoff, 99, of Grand Forks, ND passed away on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks.

Shirley Delores Burgess was born on April 6, 1921 in Detroit Lakes, MN the daughter of Amy (Webster) Burgess and George Webster. She grew up in Detroit Lakes and graduated from Detroit Lakes High School. While employed with the Great Northern Railroad, she met Edward Hoff and they married February 29, 1944.

She is survived by her son, Timothy (Margarete, Cindy); her daughter, Debra (Marvin) Hodny; grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward and her children, Edward (Marilyn) Hoff and Cheryl (John) Hoekstra.
