1962 - The Cuban Missile Crisis was a tense 13-day standoff in October 1962 between the United States and the Soviet Union over the installation of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles from the U.S. coast. The crisis is considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war. It began when American spy planes discovered the missiles, leading to a U.S. naval blockade of Cuba and intense negotiations. The crisis ended when Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles in exchange for the U.S. promising not to invade Cuba and secretly agreeing to remove American missiles from Turkey.

In 1963, on November 22, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, while riding in a motorcade through Dealey Plaza. , George E. - Of Corunna, age 56, died Saturday, January 20, 2007 at his residence. Funeral service will be held at 11AM Thursday, January 25, 2007 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Reverend Harold K. Polk, Jr. officiating. Burial in New Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation 12Noon-3PM and 5-8PM Wednesday at the funeral home. A memorial service will be conducted by the Eagles Club #3851 at 7PM Wednesday at the funeral home. George was born in Flint, Michigan on May 31, 1950, the first son of Edward and Lucille (Tremblay) Stepulkoski and was a lifelong resident of the Genesee and Shiawassee County area. George was employed by the City of Flint Water Department for 25 years, retiring in 1994. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman and he was an original and proud member of the Flint Park Hunt Club.
